At some point in your romantic career, you’ve probably reached the depths of despair, doubted yourself, and wailed, “Why?!? Why won’t he ask me out?!!? And your kindest friends, to preserve your self-esteem, offer: “Maybe he’s just…intimidated.” To help you along in your guessing game, we interviewed men around Manila on what would make them hesitate to approach a woman they found attractive, and what would absolutely turn them off.
Men speak on what intimidates and turns them off in women.
“Women who have experienced more things than I have: that excites and intimidates me at the same time.

(I get turned off by) women who are too loud, who act like they work in a beauty parlor or a wet market.”- Joey, 26, pathologist

“If they’re suplada.”- Paolo, 26, commercial model

“The number one turn-off has to be gossiping. By that I don’t just mean saying nasty things about other people. Gossiping in my book is people-centered conversation. If a girl’s conversation has an NPM (names per minute) rating of 0.5 or higher, forget about it.”- Juan, 28, writer

“I’m intimidated by women who are taller than me. I feel like they’re thinking, ‘Come back when you’ve hit puberty, little boy.”- Joel, 30, adman and actor

“What would intimidate me is someone who has a lot of authority, someone who has a lot more experience than I does, professionally speaking. I get turned off by girls who dress in skimpy outfits…slutty-looking girls.”- Jody, 29, Manager

“What intimidates me? Frankly, nothing. I just get turned off if I know the woman’s a party girl.”- George, 30, Real Estate Consultant

“What would keep me from approaching a woman to whom I am attracted would be beauty that calls attention to itself (though I don’t mean it as a neurotic preoccupation on the part of the lady). I’d like my beloved to be a personification of the haiku.”- Randy, 26, Instructor and Poet

“I would get intimidated by someone who is very very popular, the kind that, if she walked into the room, would immediately become the center of attention. I’d get turned off if a girl was swell-headed, or a brat.”-Tonyboy, 32 , President, Specialist Services Corporation

“I get intimidated by someone who is better off (has a higher living standard) than I am I get turned off by a girl who’s loud and is a lousy dresser. And of course, bad breath. And ugly feet!”- J.M., 25, Stockbroker

“Some women have this superior attitude towards men. But they’re wrong! Everybody’s equal. What turns me off about women? The same thing! It just turns me off when women feel they are in a position to judge what is wrong or right or if one is good or bad or funny or shitty. I think both men and women have the right to those judgments’.”-Charlie, 23, Artist and Businessman

“I guess I’d get intimidated if she had a strong character. What would completely turn me off? If she is bitchy.”- Bootsie, 26, Caterer

“If a guy is very serious about courting a girl, nothing would intimidate him.”Paolo, 25, Account Executive

But seriously, don’t be discouraged – the qualities that intimidate men are usually the qualities that attract them as well. As for the turn-offs, just consider that it might be time to get rid of a bad habit or hang-up. But if you happen to like yourself exactly the way you are, know that a turn-off for one guy may be a fetish for another. In that case, your motto should be: Love me, love my feet (or whatever). In desperate times, however, it wouldn’t hurt to invest in a pedicure.
